Romain van Wissen

Romain Van Wissen combines realism and abstraction with pop art replacements, making him one of the most popular artists in East Belgium and Wallonia. The contents of his colorful paintings draw their idiosyncratic power from sources of art history and popular culture. Van Wissen has also developed an unmistakable visual language, in which he deliberately contrasts subdued colours with bright neon tones and combines realistic landscape depictions with abstract areas of colour.

(Frank-Thorsten Moll, IKOB – Museum for Contemporary Art, Eupen)

Romain van Wissen is a choreographer of contrasts who seeks, selects and enhances the confrontation of colours and pictorial elements. Obviously, the contrasts of nature and artificial form, of dull-dry background colour and glaring industrial neon colours in the foreground, of painting versus drawing or pattern form a shimmering relationship of tension, which in its lightness is rather a balanced amalgam than a provocative collision.

(Dr. Dirk Tölke – art historian)
