Viorel Chirea

His style is defined by the confrontation with aspects such as space, border, centre, expansion and transgression, as well as the creation of tension between statics and dynamics. The movement, the furious standstill, runs in a kind of parallel world. The speed dictates the disappearance, on the edge of the Autobahn, in no-man’s-land the gliding gaze disintegrates with the blinking into individual splitters, splinters the motorway landscape. A landscape, like a portrait, is always to be understood as an imagined place, a container for the storage of one’s own positions. Resting in itself by anticipating the speed as transience, perhaps a landscape that drifts away, which becomes less and less tangible in its individual components forest, field, industry. At first glance, the motorway pictures look like photos, so real and clear in expression. The artist has set himself the task of addressing the question of perception and has deliberately chosen everyday situations for this purpose in order to offer the viewer a starting point. A snapshot that also picks up on the topic of time and timing and makes it clear to us how important it is to be able to distinguish one hundredth of a second from the next. The lighting conditions that Viorel Chirea plays with are of great importance, as if it were the simplest in the world: All of a sudden, in the greyish twilight, the focus is set on a banal signboard, which thus acquires an almost surreal touch, although we are actually very familiar with such signs. Viorel Chirea thus faces one of the greatest challenges in art: he gives us the aesthetics and tension of what is barely noticed in everyday life and thus succeeds in awakening deep feelings in us by observing and mastering the work of art, where we would hardly have expected them.
